Ok, it's been a bit sense I posted that question and I have become a bit more comfortable with the kde. Wish this machine had some more guts under the hood, only a p4 but with 2 gig of mem.
kde 3.5, I have the ability to configure more then one desktop and can actually ctrl/tab my way through them. It's kind of cool, but I don't really use it. yet.
With regard to my original question, I have done everything through the command line with regard to the ports/packages.
Thank you for the followup. I'm still punting my way through this setup... But, I like it for the most part.

I remember once seeing a way to get the left most string in a word.
Let's say: a="First.Second.Third" (separated by dot)
echo ${a#*.} shows --> Second.Third
echo ${a##*.} shows --> Third
How do I get the the left most string "First" Or "First.Second" ???

What's the correct way to change the initramfs file that's used during boot?
I know that it's a gzipped cpio archive, but when I gunzip, extract, re-archive (without changing any files), and gzip, then the result is that the system does not boot any more. And I even set the cpio archive type.

DESCRIPTION
kcookiejar4 handles the HTTP cookies providing a D-BUS service to store/retrieve/clean cookies.
GENERIC OPTIONS
--author
Show author information.
--help
Show help about options.
--help-all
Show all options.
--help-kde
Show KDE specific options.
--help-qt
Show Qt specific options.
--license
Show license information.
-v--version
Show version information
APPLICATION OPTIONS
--shutdown
Shut down cookie jar and the D-BUS service.
--remove domain
Removes cookies for domain from the cookie jar.
--remove-all

USAGE
KDE web browser konqueror uses kcookiejar4 for storing and managing cookies using the D-Bus service kcookiejar4 provides.
When kcookiejar4 is started without parameters, it provides a D-BUS service to handle HTTP cookies.
When kcookiejar4 is started with some parameters, it does additional tasks to the cookies jar it provides, like removing the cookies from
one domain.
