That's because, no matter how often people try, you can't use shell commands inside an FTP session. Yes, both can be used interactive. Yes, both can be scripted. No, they don't use the same commands. No, FTP is not a substitute for SSH or Telnet.

so in unix this command works works and shows me a list of directories
find . -name \*.xls -exec dirname {} \; | sort -u | > list.txt
but when i try running a perl script to run this command

The below does the job on command-line:

ftp_get_option - Retrieves various runtime behaviours of the current FTP stream
SYNOPSIS
mixed ftp_get_option (resource $ftp_stream, int $option)
DESCRIPTION
This function returns the value for the requested $option from the specified FTP connection.
PARAMETERS
o $ftp_stream
- The link identifier of the FTP connection.
o $option
- Currently, the following options are supported:
