delete empty spaces at specific column
Hi All,

If anybody could help me with my scenario here. I have a statement file. Example of some content:

Code:
     DATE          DESC      Debit    Credit    Total    Rate
    02-Jan-08   Lodgement   200.00            1200.00    2.51
    14-Sep-07   Withdrawal            50.00   1000.00    2.51
    29-Oct-06   Lodgement   100.00            1050.00    2.51

What I want to achieve here is to remove couple of empty spaces between column Total and Rate. Any lines that start with date (eg. as date above 02-Jan-08,14-Sep-07,29-Oct-06), I want to remove lets say 2 empty spaces between Total value and Rate value. Date always starts after 8 spaces. Can this be done with sed or awk? I'm totaly lost here. At the moment the Rate value is out of the box (special statement paper). I want to put inside this special box. Hence I need o remove 2 spaces or perhaps more. Need to play around until get the right way.

NAME

       empty-page - empty page detector of the ExactImage toolkit

SYNOPSIS

       empty-page [option...] {-i | --input} input-file

       empty-page {-h | --help}

DESCRIPTION

       ExactImage is a fast C++ image processing library. Unlike many other library frameworks it allows operation in several color spaces and bit
       depths natively, resulting in low memory and computational requirements.

       empty-page counts dark pixels of a black and white image and decides with a threshold whether the page is most probably empty, and thus can
       be removed from the image processing stream.

OPTIONS

       -i file, --input file
	   Read image from the specified file.

       -m n, --margin n
	   Set width of border margin to skip. For speed reasons, the margin has to be a multiple of 8. The default is 16.

       -p x, --percentage x
	   Set fraction of permissible dark pixels. The default is 0.05 (5%).

       -h, --help
	   Display help text and exit.

EXAMPLES

	   $ empty-page -i test.tif
	   The image has 75461 dark pixels from a total of 1060992 (7.11231%).
	   non-empty

EXIT STATUS

       The exit status is 0 if the image is mostly white, 1 otherwise.
