One way that I've gained hardware is by the "company is going to trash it" venue and also if anyone in your family's getting a new pc or laptop for Christmas see if you can score the old one.
I'd try a bunch of different distros but yes the basic commands are the same. As far as ease of installation, for me, Ubuntu was the best. That's what I run everyday now.

I have a data file that I tail and dump the data into a new file at midnight.
To work I had to use tail -n2 livefile.csv >> storefile.csv. This is ging me 2 or 3 entries at a time into the storefile.csv.

SYNOPSIS
trash [arguments] ...
DESCRIPTION
Trash-cli package provides a command line interface trashcan utility compliant with the FreeDesktop.org Trash Specification. It remembers
