You could use a nameref (ksh93):

  typeset member=$1
  nameref dbList=$2
  [[ ${dbList[member]} != "" ]]
}

letterarray=(a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z)

if isPresent 12 letterarray
