I have a question on /etc/syslog.conf file in Solaris 10.
Below is a line taken from /etc/syslog.conf file and I know that the last field (operator) is where the logs gets outputted but how do I find out what the output file name format is going to be and which directory it gets outputted to?
Hello,
I need a few information/explanation about system messages, syslog.conf file and syslogd daemon.

OK I am running solaris 10.
I made some changes to my ipf.conf file and issued the command:
ipf -Fa -f /etc/ipf/ipf.conf
to flush out the old and bring in the new changes.
When I ran ipfstat -ioh to verify it had brought in the new rule set I saw something I wasn't expecting to see.

In /etc/syslog.conf, if an error type is not specified, is it logged anywhere (most preferable is it logged to /var/log/messages) or not?

syslog
SYSLOG(8) System Logging SYSLOG(8)NAME
syslog-ng, syslogd
DESCRIPTION
There are different syslog daemon implementations supported as the system's syslog service, currently syslogd, syslog-ng and rsyslogd
The first installed daemon activates itself for the syslog service. Starting with openSUSE-11.2, it is rsyslogd, before it was syslog-ng.
But this depends on the software selection during the installation.
The name of the daemon used as syslog service is specified in the
SYSLOG_DAEMON variable in /etc/sysconfig/syslog.
The yast2 sysconfig module provides a comfortable way to switch to another installed daemon and restart the service.
The /etc/init.d/syslog init script is able to handle all supported daemons.
