Thank you for your response. So it seems it was a design decision in one version of UNIX, but not copied over to its siblings.

hi, sorry for asking what I am sure is a really easy question, I am wanting to cut the users real name from the output of 'finger'.
$ cut -f2-3 filename
is in my script but it only seems to cut the first line.

I have a file whose values are delimited using colon ( : )

i am trying to get JUST the PID from the ps command.
my command line is:
ps -ef | grep "mintty" | cut -d' ' -f2
but i get an empty line. i assume that the delimiter is not just one space character, but can't figure out what should i do in order to do that.
