oooh yeah I heard that already 20 years ago - and here we are ... still with the same proprietary operating systems ... probably more distributed than ever before.

First of all - what would you like to do - become a sysadmin - than you might want to learn shell scripting, c / c++ / perl and you need to learn about hardware and networking - or do you want to become an application developer - than java and ruby and all this is maybe the way to go.

Do you have alrady any knowledge in Unix / Linux ? Get a cheap old unix box and just 'do' Unix. If it'a a proprietary one, get the free books from the vendors that show you step by step what to do ... install it - mess it up - try to fix the problems ... basically that's it.
