SUNW, hme0: Link Down - Cable problem

It probably doesn't look like a workstation to you, but that is a late 90's Sun workstation 
Basically an Ultra 80 with a stand. It would have one built in NIC, and probably an addon quad NIC if it was ordered that way. I believe the addon ports would come up as qfe0, qfe1, etc.. you can try plumbing qfe0, qfe1, etc and see if one plumbs...
Now that I think about it, I'd say it would be better to first try the network connection the E150 is using in another box. Just take a laptop, hardcode it with the IP info from the E150, have the network guys reserve the IP to the laptop's MAC (if that's what they are using to reserve the IP) then remove the cable from the E150's hme0 right and plug it right into the laptop. That will tell you if the network connection works or not.
If it works, then you know is something in the server.

I have a very unique problem. Quite often my on board ethernet port( hme0 ) related message is appearing in /var/adm/messages.
The message is hme0: babble.. The port is up and alive.
What does this message mean.. Is the on board port is about to fail??

Is there any difference between a null modem cable or a modem cable ?
i assume that a null modem cable is a normal cable that i used from cpu serial ports to a modem for dialup.

Hi .....
My problem is that when i reboot the system i can't connect to the network because my ethernet ( hme0 ) is down , i must up it by ifconfig command
after reboot :

I have a 420r server it boots up all of the network settings are correct, however the machines network connection is not working. Cant ping anything from it, cant ping it from another machine on the network.

/usr/sbin/laptop_mode [ cmd ] [ force ] DESCRIPTION
This manual page documents briefly the /usr/sbin/laptop_mode command. laptop_mode is a program that applies the settings given in the /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf configuration file. The primary use is to control the laptop mode feature included in Linux kernels with versions 2.6.6 and higher, and 2.4.23 and higher. This feature increases battery life by letting your hard drive spin down. This is achieved by grouping disk write activity into "chunks" that are spaced at larger intervals than they normally would be. In addition to sup- porting the Linux kernel's laptop mode feature, /usr/sbin/laptop_mode also supports various power saving modules which are configured through configuration files in the /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d directory. It is not recommended to call /usr/sbin/laptop_mode directly to start or stop laptop mode, except in hardware event handlers. To apply new configuration settings from laptop-mode.conf, call the laptop-mode service init script with the reload parameter. COMMANDS
Specify force as the second parameter to force laptop_mode to re-apply a state even if the computer is already in that state.
