Operating Systems Solaris Need description on System Controllers Post 302316131 by sbk1972 on Thursday 14th of May 2009 07:24:12 AM

Hi,

System controllers are best thought of as little pc's that monitor the health of the chassis. Within high end servers, F15 / F25 / 4800 / 6800 and lots of others, you have individual domains running solaris. These domains are monitored by the SC controller.

SC controllers come in pairs, one being the master, the other the slave, all to ensure redundancy in the event of a hardware problem.

What you might be getting confused with are Loms / Aloms. Advanced Lights Out management are internal `cards` that allow you to connect on to and be able to switch off / on the server. This is tremendous is the server is located miles away in a dark data centre, i.e. not supported.

So, SC controllers are small little pc's / nodes running a form of os ( older versions ) or reduced version of solaris, that controll the operation / booting of configured domain(s) within a high end chassis. Like a Matron in control of several hopstial wards.

Lom / Aloms are individual cards, installed into any server, that allows you to switch on / off, monitor the health of the physical server.

install-solaris - install the Solaris operating system SYNOPSIS
install-solaris install-solaris invokes the Solaris Install program. Depending on graphical capability and available memory at the time of invocation, install-solaris invokes either a text-based installer or a graphical installer. The following minimum requirements for physical memory dictate which features are available during installation: For SPARC machines: 128 MB Minimum physical memory for all installation types 128 MB Minimum physical memory required for windowing system 384 MB Minimum physical memory required for graphical-based installation For x86 machines: 256 MB Minimum physical memory for all installation types 256 MB Minimum physical memory required for windowing system 512 MB Minimum physical memory required for graphical-based installation In some cases, even if the minimum physical memory is present, available virtual memory after system startup can limit the number of fea- tures available. install-solaris exists only on the Solaris installation media (CD or DVD) and should be invoked only from there. Refer to the for more details. install-solaris allows installation of the operating system onto any standalone system. install-solaris loads the software available on the installation media.
