losing /usr/bin directory

check the filemon utility, or write a script that checks if the directory is still there in periodic intervals, and write to a logfile with timestamp
then you have the specific time
I would check first:
1. automated process on the machine, per cron perhaps
check every users crontab (crontab -l) that has the rights to delete the folder, and check for user created scripts running
2. automated process outside the machine
triggered per ssh, telnet, rsh...
you can compare the time from your scripts logfile I wrote above with the login logs on your server an find out the IP (last, syslog)
3. manually triggered by a user, but seems not very likely
like step 2, analyse login logs for that

All the basic linux commands, ie. echo, find, etc, are located in /bin. I have a couple of programs that have these commands pointed towards /usr/bin, ie, /usr/bin/echo (even though the actual 'echo' command is in /bin). Q1. I understand that /usr/local/bin means I can install/uninstall stuff in here and have any chance of messing up my original system files or effecting any other users. I created this directory myself.

I found that the same commands(sort, du, df, find, grep etc.) exists in both dir.
What is the difference to use them?
i.e: to use xpg4/bin/grep and usr/bin/grep
My OS version is SunOS 5.10

I'm not sure if this is the default behavior for the ld command, but it does not seem to be looking in /usr/local/lib for shared libraries.
I was trying to compile the latest version of Kanatest from svn. The autorgen.sh script seems to exit without too much trouble:

/usr/ucb/cc [options] DESCRIPTION
/usr/ucb/cc is the interface to the BSD Compatibility Package C compiler. It is a script that looks for the link /usr/ccs/bin/ucbcc to the C compiler. The /usr/ccs/bin/ucbcc link is available only with the SPROcc package, whose default location is /opt/SUNWspro. The /usr/ucb/cc interface is identical to /usr/ccs/bin/ucbcc, except that BSD headers are used and BSD libraries are linked before base libraries. The /opt/SUNWspro/man/man1/acc.1 man page is available only with the SPROcc package. OPTIONS
The /usr/ucb/cc interface accepts the same options as /usr/ccs/bin/ucbcc, with the following exceptions: -Idir Search dir for included files whose names do not begin with a slash (/) prior to searching the usual directories. The directories for multiple -I options are searched in the order specified. The preprocessor first searches for #include files in the directory containing sourcefile, and then in directories named with -I options (if any), then /usr/ucbinclude, and finally, in /usr/include. -Ldir Add dir to the list of directories searched for libraries by /usr/ccs/bin/ucbcc. This option is passed to /usr/ccs/bin/ld and /usr/lib.
