perl replace command, stumped!
Ok,
I stole some code from a program that takess a hash of a password from PasswdMD5 and replaces it in the /etc/shadown file on a linux system. I run his program and it's fine. Well I took the same code and put it in another program that won't ask for prompgx and such and this code won't work:

perl -p -i.bk -e  's#^root:.*?:#root:$HASHLINUX:#' /etc/shadow

I validated $HASHLINUX has a good value in it. By not working I mean in the shadow file there is nothing in the column where the password hash value should be at.

Anyways I changed it to the below and it will work:

echo "perl -p -i.bk -e  's#^root:.*?:#root:$HASHLINUX:#' /etc/shadow" > /tmp/runpass
  sh /tmp/runpass

I really don't want to direct the statement to a external file and run it, but I cannot figure out why it won't work directly from the shell script.

Here's the whole procedure:

  sh /tmp/runpass

Stumped .. is this a command line arg?

NAME

     nbdst -- NetBoot deferred shadow tool

SYNOPSIS

     nbdst [-recycle | -preallocate size] devnode shadowfile

DESCRIPTION

     nbdst is used during NetBoot to associate a shadow file with the disk image being used as the root device. After the shadow file is attached,
     subsequent writes to the root device will be redirected to the shadow file, which normally resides on local storage.  nbdst is invoked by
     /etc/rc.netboot

ARGUMENTS

     The following arguments must be specified:
     devnode	    The device node of the root device, in the form "disk0"
     shadowfile     Path to a shadow file which will be created and associated with the NetBoot root device

OPTIONS

     -recycle  If a shadow file already exists, reset it and use it again.  Otherwise, information written to an existing shadow file will reap-
	       pear.  Reusing a previous shadow file without resetting it requires that the shadow file be created with the same base image.

     -preallocate size
	       Set the shadow file to the given size up front.	This forces a reset of the shadow file (like -recycle).

NOTE

     nbdst can only be run as root.
