The usual 3 steps are
- ./configure
- make
- make install
You're leaving out the middle step.
From my point you've got 3 options (with the most preferable first):
- Change your PATH variable permanently to include /usr/local/bin
- Run make using the same modified path variable as for configure (PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin make)
- Run configure again as CC=/usr/local/bin/gcc ./configure
But I'd really suggest using either the first or, but only if the first is not possible, the second method. The third should only be used if everything else fails.
