Are you downloading a file or fetching a webpage? If you are downloading a file then you add the Content-Length entity to the header and a progress bar will display. If you are fetching a webpage I don't know how you would add a progress bar. I'm not familiar enough with WWW:::Mechanize to know if it supports entities in headers. Have you read through the documentation?
