Hi,
I have been trying to resolve this issue but no luck !....please suggest !
I need to grep or awk(which ever helps me best) a pattern from a list of 1000 files in a given dir but the pattern is a lil tricky:
pattern : '"${ETL_VW_SCHEMA}"'.<my_table>
The quotes are mandatory(both single and double)
Single quotes cannot be included in a single-quoted string, but can be in a double=quoted one. Double quotes can be included in a double=quoted string, but must be escaped:
Hi, I'm very new to scripting.
grep $s $filename | awk '{print $2}' | cut -c 1-8
How can I optimize this using a single awk?
I tried:
awk '/$s/ {print $2}' $filename | cut -c 1-8
However didn't work, I think the awk is not recognizing $s and the verbal is something else. (6 Replies)

This may just be a lack of experience talking, but I always assumed that when possible it was better to use a commands built in abilities rather than to pipe to a bunch of commands. I wrote a (very simple) script a while back that was meant to pull out a certain error code, and report back what... (4 Replies)
Hello,
I trying to extract text that is surrounded by xml-tags. I tried this
cat tst.xml | egrep "<SERVER>.*</SERVER>" |sed -e "s/<SERVER>\(.*\)<\/SERVER>/\1/"|tr "|" " "
which works perfect, if the start-tag and the end-tag are in the same line, e.g.:

zegrep
ZGREP(1) BSD General Commands Manual ZGREP(1)NAME
zgrep, zegrep, zfgrep -- print lines matching a pattern in gzip-compressed files
SYNOPSIS
zgrep [grep-flags] [--] pattern [files ...]
zegrep [grep-flags] [--] pattern [file ...]
zfgrep [grep-flags] [--] pattern [file ...]
DESCRIPTION
zgrep runs grep(1) on files or stdin, if no files argument is given, after decompressing them with zcat(1).
The grep-flags and pattern arguments are passed on to grep(1). If an -e flag is found in the grep-flags, zgrep will not look for a pattern
argument.
zegrep calls egrep(1), while zfgrep calls fgrep(1).
EXIT STATUS
In case of missing arguments or missing pattern, 1 will be returned, otherwise 0.
