Shortly before Christmas my old and trusted laptop also died (background light of the display is not working any more and replacing a display on a laptop is costing more than a new one usually), so i can relate to what you are going through.
I bought a new HP Pavilion dv7, which runs quite fine with Fedora Core 10 in the 64-bit variant (this is actually something which doesn't work with Windows). I still struggle with the WiFi and the sound (see
here), but VMware was installed without problems and runs an XP installation finely. Actually i too like to play games. ;-))
I downloaded the VMware 30-day-test workstation, created some machines and now use the non-charge player to run them.

I have a problem on CDE 1.4 Solaris 8.
It looks like each time I lock the screen, the dtexec that invoke
the dtscreen (that is o.k.) do not died after it done his job and it stay in the system and cause many zombie.

PANIC : exit cannot exec /etc/init (PID1).
I used two floppy boot/root disks to boot from floppy.
I followed the procedures to restore the files:

vmmouse_detect - VMware mouse device autodetection tool
SYNOPSIS
vmmouse_detect
OPTIONS
vmmouse_detect has no options
DESCRIPTION
vmmouse_detect is a tool for detecting if running in a VMware environment where vmmouse is used. It exits with a 0 return value if the
vmmouse client is enabled, and 1 if not.
DIAGNOSTICS
vmmouse_detect's exit status is used to communicate information.
0 vmmouse_detect found a mouse and exited normally.
1 Either the vmmouse client was not enabled, or it is not being run from within a VMware virtual machine.
