You can force the parameter to be a number not a string.

num=$(($1 + 0))
if [ ${num} -le 2279 ]
then
echo "A"
else
echo "B"
fi

Writing my script and I'm banging my head on the desk right now ... My biggest problem is the 3rd IF statement where I check if the username exists.
