Thanks Rubin that works..another problem

Thanks rubin really appreciate that...the command you sent worked for one set of files, I just noticed that there is another text file with similar data just a small difference i was trying to play around making some changes for the code you sent but i am stuck at a point(earlier D was constant for all Detail records but now all the detail records are numbered 1,2,3,4,5 i was using $2=="[1-20]+" but it doesnt work)...my apology that i didnt notice there were two different kind of files, the new file data:

Instead of 'H' its '0' and instead of 'D' its 1,2,3,4,5....
(1,2,3,4,5,...depending on how many dependents that parent record-'0' will have)

Same criteria need to check if 8th column is NULL.

Req - can you throw in couple of lines of explanation as i worked with it a lot but cudn't understand the following bolded ones in the code what its inteded to do.

XmTextSetSource -- A Text function that sets the source of the widget SYNOPSIS

XmTextSetSource sets the source of the Text widget. Text widgets can share sources of text so that editing in one widget is reflected in another. This function sets the source of one widget so that it can share the source of another widget. Setting a new text source destroys the old text source if no other Text widgets are using that source. To replace a text source but keep it for later use, create an unmanaged Text widget and set its source to the text source you want to keep. widget Specifies the Text widget ID. source Specifies the source with which the widget displays text. This can be a value returned by the XmTextGetSource(3) function. If no source is specified, the widget creates a default string source. top_character Specifies the position in the text to display at the top of the widget. This is an integer number of characters from the begin- ning of the text buffer. The first character position is 0 (zero). cursor_position Specifies the position in the text at which the insert cursor is located. This is an integer number of characters from the begin- ning of the text buffer. The first character position is 0 (zero).
