It's a TTY port
Section 2.15.5 of the redbook REDP-4138 (p5 550 and 550q Tech Overview ) has a diagram of the operator panel which looks just like your diagram. The book labels this port as Serial Port 1 alternate connector. It is used to attach a TTY console to the system unit without getting around behind it. You would normally administer this system from an HMC, so this port is not especially useful. But there are some functions such as ASMI access that can be performed from a TTY. I've never done it, but I think if the system is configured as a full-system LPAR, then this would be the tty0 port.

Hey All,
Trying to connect to the Power5 9133-55A serial console using a serial-to-usb converter (RS232). The other end is connected via null modem. Tried minicom, putty and other Linux utilities, no luck. The serial device shows up as /dev/ttyUSB0.
