Here's another variation:
$(...) is the same as backticks, `...`. sed -n doesn't print anything without the p command. /inet /{...} only matches lines that contain the text "inet " and then executes the commands between { and } (separated by semicolons). s/.*addr:// strips away everything up to and including "addr:". s/ .*// strips away the first remaining space and everything after it. p prints the result.

iam trying to set my eri0 interface but with little luck .
when i set the ip using ipconfig i always get "bad adress"..
moreover when i use ifconfig eri0 i can notice that the inet is 0.0.0.0 and the netmask 0

Can someone show me how to cat "only the IP address of e1000g0" using ifconfig -a.
i am trying to grep only the ip address (xx.xx.xx.xx) from the bunch of all other things like, broadcast address, IPV4, UP........and so on.

I can access this box using telnet, port 22 using adress IP A and B
A=AA.AA.XX.XX and B=AA.AA.YYY.YYY
I can confirm these 2 are the same space, I can see

I am trying to create a script extracting the IP provided by ifconfig.
I tried with grep + awk but I am returned more than I need.
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 | grep "inet addr:" | awk '/inet addr:/ { print $2 }'
and returns
addr:10.15.1.64

The script utility makes a record of everything printed on your screen. The record is written to filename. If no file name is given, the
record is saved in the file typescript. See WARNINGS.
The script command forks and creates a sub-shell, according to the value of $SHELL, and records the text from this session. The script ends
when the forked shell exits or when Control-d is typed.

The following option is supported:
-a Appends the session record to filename, rather than overwriting it.
