bash variable - unix command
I want to just run this command from a bash script and
put it in variable.
date '+%M'
gives the minutes in solaris.

Hi, wondering if it's been asked before but didn't find matches from google. Basically I have this line:
myvar=$(echo -e "a\tb")
Now somehow the '\t' from the echo output gets replaced with white space and then stored in $myvar.
It creates a problem for me later to use tab as delimiter to do... (2 Replies)

I have been trying to increment the value of variable to 1, 2, 3 etc. but, it displays

Will following set up work in bash script? I've got errors if assigning following binary command to a variable. But on the other hand, COMMAND="ls" works. Any explanation please? How can I assign binary command to a variable COMMAND then I can just call ${COMMAND}?

NAME
rdate - set system date from a remote host
SYNOPSIS
rdate hostname
DESCRIPTION
rdate sets the local date and time from the hostname given as an argument. You must have the authorization solaris.system.date on the local
system. Typically, rdate is used in a startup script.
The inetd daemon responds to rdate requests. To enable inetd response, the lines invoking the time command in inetd.conf must not be com-
mented out.
USAGE
The rdate command is IPv6-enabled. See ip6(7P).
