I found the problem
I was trying to add an entry to the /etc/dfs/dfstab and the /etc/dfs/sharetab by editing the file. Instead, I had to use the "share" command to do so.

After I invoked this command, the nfsd daemon started up:

share -F nfs -o rw /vol1
