ok i got it..
i am using the following:
awk '{i=NF-1;printf "\n%d", $i;}' try2 > try3
ok one last question. i have this one file and i am formatting (removing lines, extracting columns etc) right now i am creating a new file for every formatting.i have five things to extract so i generate 5 files.it is really inefficient. is there an easier way?

I'm trying to replace the $98 field with "T" if the last field (108th) is T
I've tried
awk 'BEGIN{OFS=FS="|"} {if ($108=="T")sub($98,"T"); print}' test.txt
but that doesn't do anything
also tried

igawk - gawk with include files
SYNOPSIS
igawk [ all gawk options ] -f program-file [ -- ] file ...
igawk [ all gawk options ] [ -- ] program-text file ...
DESCRIPTION
Igawk is a simple shell script that adds the ability to have ``include files'' to gawk(1).
AWK programs for igawk are the same as for gawk, except that, in addition, you may have lines like
@include getopt.awk
in your program to include the file getopt.awk from either the current directory or one of the other directories in the search path.
OPTIONS
See gawk(1) for a full description of the AWK language and the options that gawk supports.
EXAMPLES
cat << EOF > test.awk
@include getopt.awk
BEGIN {
while (getopt(ARGC, ARGV, "am:q") != -1)
...
}
