Thanks for the solutions. i was looking at a one line command and the solution given by SFNYC suits.

Bakunin, thanks for the solution as well. I believe the idea of using the sed is good. I shall work on that.. Pour in your thoughts if you find it can be done in much better way.

i have been doing this script to match every line in a current log file (access_log) with strings that i list from a path (consist of 100 of user's name ex: meggae ).. and then make a directory of every string from the text file (/path/meggae/) --->if it matched.. then print every line from the... If TRANS = 'N' and m >= n: find the least squares solution of an overdetermined system, i.e., solve the least squares problem minimize || B - A*X ||. 2. If TRANS = 'T' and m >= n: find the minimum norm solution of an undetermined system A**T * X = B. 4.
