Yes, your right, prob should have startd a new thread.

I see what you mean when you said:

You don't need to cd to a directory -- any file-oriented command will accept a full path name just as well as a plain file name.

At first I was wondering; "If you do not use cd to move into a dir, how did you move into that directory."

If I understand correctly I think what you are saying is that, you don't need to go into that directory to create a new directory inside it, just use the complete path.

I had just started to read a bit about variables, and seen basic use in the tutorial I have been trying to work through....but until I get sh rather than csh, I am still a bit stuck.

Later today, I will downgrade my test box to the older 0.69b4 as suggested by Dan, and I should be able to learn a bit more.

Up until two weeks ago, I had not even looked at doing anything via the command line since I was at school 20 years ago, so learning a lot at the moment.

Thanks for the help

Neil

The procedure tk_chooseDirectory pops up a dialog box for the user to select a directory. The following option-value pairs are possible as command line arguments: -initialdir dirname Specifies that the directories in directory should be displayed when the dialog pops up. If this parameter is not specified, then the directories in the current working directory are displayed. If the parameter specifies a relative path, the return value will convert the relative path to an absolute path. -mustexist boolean Specifies whether the user may specify non-existent directories. If this parameter is true, then the user may only select directo- ries that already exist. The default value is false. -parent window Makes window the logical parent of the dialog. The dialog is displayed on top of its parent window. If this option is not specified, then a default title will be dis- played. EXAMPLE
