UPDATE: I found a quick and easy way to do this. I was approaching it wrong. Rather than running the script normally (./script) all I need to do is source the script (source ./script). This runs it in the current shell and I am able to use jobs to manage the background processes.

I am using a telnet session (VT100) and need to modify my .profile so that it will set the color of the telnet session. I am not using Xterm (ie: can't use .Xdefaults). could not figure what i did after to keep it no hangup -

I want to send that foreground process to the background, but also have it direct the output to a logfile.

NAME
script - make record of a terminal session
SYNOPSIS
script [-a] [filename]
DESCRIPTION
The script utility makes a record of everything printed on your screen. The record is written to filename. If no file name is given, the
record is saved in the file typescript. See WARNINGS.
The script command forks and creates a sub-shell, according to the value of $SHELL, and records the text from this session. The script ends
when the forked shell exits or when Control-d is typed.
OPTIONS
The following option is supported:
-a Appends the session record to filename, rather than overwriting it.
NOTES
script places everything that appears on the screen in filename, including prompts.
