But as noted earlier, there are dialects of echo and not all of them work like that. printf is at least somewhat more portable. Or to paraphrase the immortal words of the creator of Perl (Larry Wall: "It is easier to write a portable shell than to write a portable shell script"), use a portable language instead. (Hint: Perl.)

DESCRIPTION
Returns TRUE if the $filename exists and is writable. The filename argument may be a directory name allowing you to check if a directory
is writable.
Keep in mind that PHP may be accessing the file as the user id that the web server runs as (often 'nobody'). Safe mode limitations are not
taken into account.
PARAMETERS

- The filename being checked.
RETURN VALUES
Returns TRUE if the $filename exists and is writable.
