grep and cut problem
Hello folks,
I have to (e)grep out a certain pattern e.g.
Code:
 <TAG1> from a huge log file which does not have any space as such.
The thing is that once I have 'grep'ed out the <TAG1> from the file I need to extract the content within the tags, i.e,
<TAG1>Data_To_Be_Extracted</TAG1>

The underlined data needs to be extracted.
The problem is that with such a huge file with big wide lines with lots of tags I can't get hold of any delimiter.

Hi Is there a way to cut the last two characters off a word or number given that this word or number can be of varying length? How should I cut this line using cut and grep?

not sure how to do it. wan't to delete it using cut and grep ince i would use it in the shell. but how must the command be? grep "64.233.181.103 wwwGoogle.com" /etc/hosts | cut -d the delimeter is just a space. can you help meplease. :D (1 Reply)

NAME

     zgrep, zegrep, zfgrep -- print lines matching a pattern in gzip-compressed files

SYNOPSIS

     zgrep [grep-flags] [--] pattern [files ...]

     zegrep [grep-flags] [--] pattern [file ...]

     zfgrep [grep-flags] [--] pattern [file ...]

DESCRIPTION

     zgrep runs grep(1) on files or stdin, if no files argument is given, after decompressing them with zcat(1).

     The grep-flags and pattern arguments are passed on to grep(1).  If an -e flag is found in the grep-flags, zgrep will not look for a pattern
     argument.

     zegrep calls egrep(1), while zfgrep calls fgrep(1).

EXIT STATUS

     In case of missing arguments or missing pattern, 1 will be returned, otherwise 0.
