I am trying to search for a particular occurrence of a string in a file, and if found, append another string to the end of that line.
Here is my file contents:
column1 userlist default nowrite=3 output=4
column2 access default nowrite=3
Here is the code:

I have 2 files that I am working with
$ cat file1
server1
server3
server5
server6
server8
$ cat file2
server1;Solaris;
server2; SLES;
server3;Linux;
server4; Solaris;
server5;SLES;
server6;SLES;
server7;Solaris;

I need to search the file using strings "Request Type" , " Request Method" , "Response Type" and by using result set find the xml tags and convert into a single line?. below are the scenarios.

i have a generated report in unix in the following command like

the input file format is fixed
I need the my output file with append text as below

I want to search a small string in a large string and find the locations of the string. For this I used grep "string" -ob <file name where the large string is stored>. Now this gives me the locations of that string. Now how do I store these locations in a text file.

append varName ?value value value ...?

Append all of the value arguments to the current value of variable varName. If varName doesn't exist, it is given a value equal to the
concatenation of all the value arguments. The result of this command is the new value stored in variable varName. This command provides
an efficient way to build up long variables incrementally. For example, ``append a $b'' is much more efficient than ``set a $a$b'' if $a
is long.
