automake is GNU and so requires the gnu tools for compiling. You installed all of these right?
HPUX has a perl implementation FWIW.
Hewlett-Packard Co.
Thre HPUX porting centre has a lot perl modules, check there as well.

While trying compile a C++ file in UNIX with gcc whose make rule involves the usage of
/usr/ccs/bin/as, I get the following error:
