I think it has to be done with "smit update_all" command, but I can't be sure, you should contact IBM tech support asking for this. Upgrade of the core OS may be tricky task, depending on your setup and/or installed packages.

I have an old H80 with AIX 4.3, I want to upgrade to AIX 5.3, is this possible?
I have read in some documentation that is necesary do it version to version, I mean... 4.3->5.1 5.1->5.2 5.2->5.3, anybody have this experience?

Requirement: Upgrade RHEL 3 to RHEL 5.
Question: How to plan the upgrade?
Present state: Know that there is no direct upgrade path visible. And RH does not support direct upgrade.

setup - graphical setup program for the esp package manager
SYNOPSIS
setup [ directory ]
DESCRIPTION
setup provides a graphical installation interface for EPM-generated portable installation packages. It presents a step-by-step dialog for
collecting a list of packages to install and accepting any license agreements for those packages.
setup searches for products in the current directory or the directory specified on the command-line.
INSTALLATION TYPES
The default type of installation is "custom". That is, users will be able to select from the list of products and install them.
setup also supports other types of installations. The setup.types file, if present, defines the other installation types.
