Ken Thompson thought is was an acceptable limit. He could have made it 15 or 16 just as easily. Or 12 or 13. There was nothing magical about 14. In the early 70's 14 seemed like a lot for a filename.

/tmp: File system full, swap space limit exceeded

Can you help. My server sunning solaris 9 on x86 platform pretty much hung for a few hours... I could not use telnet or ssh to the box - it kept refusing connection. build_script() This function returns the appropriate name for the Build script on the local platform. make_executable($filename) This makes a perl script executable. split_like_shell($string) This function splits a string the same way as the local platform does. detildefy($path) This function substitutes a tilde at the start of a path with the users homedir in an appropriate manner. man1_pagename($filename) Returns the man page filename for a script. man3_pagename($filename, $basedir) Returns the man page filename for a Perl library. manify($input_filename, $output_file, $section, $opts) Create a manpage for the script in $input_filename as $output_file in section $section ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
