i downloaded a text file from metalab.unc.edu called sh.txt and in this reference manual it refers to shell scripting exit status .. at the end of one of the examples that author gave an exit status of 127..
to what does a 127 exit status refer too and what is its purpose in the code.

I'm trying to write a script that will update a table in sysbase.
If it's failed then I want to rerun it one more time before exiting the script (fail due to bad value such as trying to put a string into datetime field or bad connection to the database)

Hi all,
I'm running a program which return 1 upon success.
But when encounters problem shell return 's '1' .
How to differentiate between them the shell return value and script return value.

I know I can easily write a function like this:

Hi,
I am using /bin/sh. I want to display the stdout and stderr on the terminal as well as save it in a file, so I'm using this command.
gmake all 2>&1 | tee log
But even if gmake fails, it's always giving 0 as exit status, i suppose because of tee.
# false 2>&1 | tee Log
# echo $?

Section 1 describes the commands available for all Tru64 UNIX users. Some reference pages in this section may contain suffixes to allow their files to exist with those of other reference pages having the same base name and section number. When used, suffixes are made up of one to four letters. See the man(1) reference page for more information on suffixes. Commands related to system maintenance appear in Section 8. ERRORS
On termination, each command returns two bytes of status, one supplied by the system giving the cause for termination and, in the case of normal termination, one supplied by the program. For more information, see exit(2). The first byte is 0 for normal termination; the sec- ond byte is customarily 0 for successful execution. A nonzero status indicates a problem, such as erroneous parameters, or bad or inacces- sible data. The status value is called variously exit code, exit status, or return code, and is described explicitly on reference pages only when special conventions apply. SEE ALSO
