Hi,

As far as I know, Ubuntu installation detects that you have a Windows installed, an then ask you to change the partition, from the installation gui, to allocate space for Ubuntu.

I have installed Ubuntu to a notebook with Windows XP without problems. Ubuntu changes the MBR, and when you boot, an application called Grub let you choose the OS you want to boot. I don't know if works with Vista though.

Good luck
