And this is why it's not working. Your login shell spawns a child shell to run this script, and the child environment is discarded when the script exits; the parent shell (your login shell) is unaffected.
You should do as fpmurphy suggests and execute the script by sourcing it in:

The "dot" command means "run in the current process environment". So the script will be run as if you typed each command within the current shell. This probably means you don't want "exit 0" in your script. :-P

script [-a] [filename]
DESCRIPTION
The script utility makes a record of everything printed on your screen. The record is written to filename. If no file name is given, the
record is saved in the file typescript. See WARNINGS.
The script command forks and creates a sub-shell, according to the value of $SHELL, and records the text from this session. The script ends
when the forked shell exits or when Control-d is typed.
OPTIONS
The following option is supported:
-a Appends the session record to filename, rather than overwriting it.
NOTES
script places everything that appears on the screen in filename, including prompts.
