Thanks,
Unfortunately, if i printf at this stage it will go straight to output and I need all the data in a specific format, not just that one column.
Remember also that this integer will eventually end up converted to a string by the array...
I need a way without using printf

Hi !
I'm looking for a way to transform certain floating point numbers in a one-line, variable length file to integers.
I can do this in a crude way with sed :
sed -e 's/0\.\(\):/\1:/g' -e 's/0\.0\(\):/\1:/g' -e 's/1\.000:/100:/g' myfile ... but this doesn't handle the rounding correctly.

I had a person bring an interesting problem to me that appears to involve some sort of rounding inside awk. I've verified this with awk and nawk on Solaris as well as with gawk 3.1.5 on a Linux box.
The original code fragment he brought me was thus:
for (index=0; index < 1; index=index+.1)
