Thanks to all who tried to help,

Basically I need to find out whether the program is running under RedHat 2.1 3.0 or 4.0 . This information is not available in uname. Parsing the information from the release or motd file is something I wanted to avoid.

Linksys WPC11 Version 4 (NOT FOR REDHAT!)

I just purchased a Linksys WPC11 Version 4 wireless PCMCIA card, and am looking for the device driver for it. Apparently, as opposed to Version 1-4, it uses a RealTek 8180 chipset. pam_motd - Display the motd file SYNOPSIS
pam_motd.so [motd=/path/filename] DESCRIPTION
pam_motd is a PAM module that can be used to display arbitrary motd (message of the day) files after a successful login. By default the /etc/motd file is shown. The message size is limited to 64KB. OPTIONS
motd=/path/filename The /path/filename file is displayed as message of the day. noupdate Don't run the scripts in /etc/update-motd.d to refresh the motd file. MODULE TYPES PROVIDED
Only the session module type is provided. RETURN VALUES
