There are some variants : postfix is not installed properly, the "main.cf" file has been deleted, or your have no rights to use it . Is this attempt made from non-root user ? Is there a number for this error code ? Do you have rights to look at the logs ? What is the OS ? Do you have SELinux enabled ?

Sending Error msg from HP-UX to E-mail address
