radoulov, isn't "fgrep ERROR file|fgrep -v foo "-the same as doing "grep ERROR file | grep -v foo", except it uses fgrep instead of grep? Is there some advantage for fgrep in this case?

The awk thing is pretty cool - I tried it and it works great. I'll have to look into awk more - I know nothing about it (yet!).

sanjustudy, I don't understand how grep -r "ERROR" * will do what I want. I thought "-r" was for searching directories recursively. Also, I don't see how it searches for "foo".

i have files with "DOMAINSOLVER ACMS" with any number of spaces in between the two words on its own line and i can find it with the following: grep -c "DOMAINSOLVER* ACMS" $FILENAMEbut i need to exclude any lines matching: "$DOMAINSOLVER". i've tried a variety of quoting and escaping with no luck.... NAME

       gzgrep, gzegrep, gzfgrep - search possibly compressed files for a regular expression

SYNOPSIS

       gzgrep [ grep_options ] [ -e ] pattern filename...

DESCRIPTION

       gzgrep is used to invoke the grep on compress'ed or gzip'ed files. All options specified are passed directly to grep.  If no file is speci-
       fied, then the standard input is decompressed if necessary and fed to grep.  Otherwise the given files are uncompressed	if  necessary  and
       fed to grep.

       If  gzgrep  is  invoked as gzegrep or gzfgrep then egrep or fgrep is used instead of grep.  If the GREP environment variable is set, gzgrep
       uses it as the grep program to be invoked. For example:

	   for sh:  GREP=fgrep	gzgrep string files
	   for csh: (setenv GREP fgrep; gzgrep string files)
