Child Script

Code:
#! /bin/ksh
# child.ksh

if [[ some condition ]]
then
       exit 256
fi
...

exit 0

Parent/Master Script

Code:
#! /bin/ksh
# parent.ksh calls child.ksh
...
echo 
./child.ksh
child_return_code=$?
echo $child_return_code

This $? in the parent script will have the return code as per the above.
