Here is one approach:

which, on your data file (with extra line in data set 9) produces:

       -n     do not output the trailing newline

       -e     enable interpretation of backslash escapes

       -E     disable interpretation of backslash escapes (default)

       NNN  the character whose ASCII code is NNN (octal)

       \     backslash

       a     alert (BEL)

            backspace

       c     produce no further output
