for string comparisions we generally use = operator.
-eq is used for integer comparisons.
if [ "str1" = "str2" ] then
fi
will do your task .

Hi, So I got his code below. $year is a string of 2010,2011 etc.
I guess I want to convert $year to an integer so I can do my if statement to see if the year string is greater than 2010? Or how could I do this?

Though str1 and str2 are not equal the script output says Equal .
Please correct me

streqvcmp - compare two strings with an equivalence mapping
SYNOPSIS
#include <your-opts.h>
cc [...] -o outfile infile.c -lopts [...]
int streqvcmp(char const* str1, char const* str2);
DESCRIPTION
Using a character mapping, two strings are compared for "equivalence". Each input character is mapped to a comparison character and the
mapped-to characters are compared for the two NUL terminated input strings. This function name is mapped to option_streqvcmp so as to not
conflict with the POSIX name space.

RETURN VALUE
the difference between two differing characters
