I was wondering how I can modify this for loop, so it only loops through the filenames that do not have an ".old" extension.
Do not use ls; it is unnnecessary and will break your script if any filenames contain spaces or other pathological characters.
You should probably also check that the new filename doesn't already exist.

DESCRIPTION
Returns TRUE if the $filename exists and is writable. The filename argument may be a directory name allowing you to check if a directory
is writable.
Keep in mind that PHP may be accessing the file as the user id that the web server runs as (often 'nobody'). Safe mode limitations are not
taken into account.
PARAMETERS
o $filename
- The filename being checked.
RETURN VALUES
Returns TRUE if the $filename exists and is writable.
