Thoughts/experiences of SAN attaching V880 to EMC SAN
Hi everyone,
I wonder if I can canvas any opinions or thoughts (good or bad) on SAN attaching a SUN V880/490 to an EMC Clarion SAN?
At the moment the 880 is using 12 internal FC-AL disks as a db server and seems to be doing a pretty good job. It is not I/O, CPU or Memory constrained and the internal disks are mirrored in a RAID 0+1 configuration.
I have 2 choices to make as we intend to increase the number of db's running on the machine(s) - these options are:
1 - To directely attach the servers to the EMC SAN with FC HBA's.
2 - To purchase StoredgeTek SCSI shelves and use SVM to manage the disks (FCAL is overkill to be honest).
I know there are all sorts of ways the SAN can stripe and chop up the disks to allow for RAID 5 etc and that SVM will make a pretty good job of doing the same on the SCSI shelves.
However I do not know if there are any significant technical advantages/disadvantages for either of these two methods.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
My own concerns are the reliability of the connection to the SAN as apposed to directly attaching the SCSI shelves. I feel keeping the SUN kit self-contained may be preferable in the long run.

Hi:
I am in the process of configuring the SAN for Solaris to host 6 oracle 9i databases. We have 30 -146 GB disks stiped with RAID 10 for SAN. Of which 11 are dedicated for databsaes related things. Then we have 2 v880 Sun Servers with 16 -73 GB disks and 24 GB memory.

asr -- driver for Adaptec I2O based SCSI/ATA host bus adapters
SYNOPSIS
device asr
DESCRIPTION
The Adaptec asr driver provides access to disks and disk arrays controlled by I2O based host bus adapters and SmartRAID SCSI RAID adapters
through the standard SCSI disk da(4) interface.
The supported adapters provide 64 bit PCI, Compact PCI, Zero Channel PCI, and up to four channels of Ultra2, Ultra 160, or Ultra320 SCSI, or
two channels of 1GB Fibre. All support RAID-0, RAID-1, RAID-10, RAID-5 and RAID-50 arrays. All SCSI target types are supported. For the
ATA based controllers, one IDE drive per channel is supported. Hot-swapping of IDE drives is not supported at this time.
All host bus adapters must be configured before they can be used with any operating system. Please contact Adaptec directly to obtain the
latest information on configuration utilities for the adapters. Currently there are both a Motif based GUI configuration utility and a CLI
based configuration utility available from the Adaptec Web site. The cards and arrays can also be configured via the BIOS based configura-
tion tool (SMOR).

The ATA based controllers present their devices as SCSI-like devices via CAM. For IDE drives attached to these cards, a subset of standard
