hi,
I'm trying to use sed to erase everything, and including the ending parenthesis. For example:
input: blah blah blah (12355)this is what i want.
output: this is what i want.
how would i do this?
i found an example online that does the opposite:

how would i do this?

Hello, I am a UNIX newbie. With that out of that way..
In order to delete a mistyped character, I need to press control+h to move the cursor to the left, and then overwrite it. If I try hitting the backspace key, it just brings me to a new prompt.

I am writing a script to wipe my hard disk, in a relatively secure manner by over-writing the disk with 3 patterns. So, I run the dd/dcfldd command 3 times with a sync call in between each command call in the script.

Can someone tell me or give me examples of the effect that this has when used. I know that \b is the backspace, but I cannot visualise it use like any other escape such as:

Authen::SASL::Perl::LOGIN - Login Authentication class
SYNOPSIS

DESCRIPTION
This method implements the client and server part of the LOGIN SASL algorithm, as described in IETF Draft
draft-murchison-sasl-login-XX.txt.
CALLBACK
The callbacks used are:
Client
user
The username to be used for authentication
pass
The user's password to be used for authentication
Server
getsecret(username)
returns the password associated with "username"
checkpass(username, password)
returns true and false depending on the validity of the credentials passed in arguments.
