You don't have to have the PC ip address in /etc/hosts but it makes it easier - you can run a ftp command to an IP (this would be a way to test if the connection is working before editing /etc/hosts - next part is an example)

$ ftp 10.140.10.10

then put your system IP INTO /etc/hosts (next part is an example)
10.140.10.10 myPC

then you can use

$ ftp myPC

user setup - only ftp access

I want to setup a user on my server and only allow that user to ftp to my server but not to be able to get to command line (telnet /ssh) I ammended my /etc/passwd so the users shell would be /usr/bin/false and this prevents log on but it also prevents the ftp.. Any ideas? (1 Reply)

NAME

       ftp - FTP client configuration file

SYNOPSIS

       /etc/default/ftp

DESCRIPTION

       Use  the ftp file to configure the behavior of the FTP client. Lines that begin with a hash symbol ("# ") are treated as comment  lines and
       are ignored.

   Behavior Directives
       The ftp file supports the following behavior directives:

       FTP_LS_SENDS_NLST=yes | no

	   The ls command of the ftp client sends an NLST to the FTP Server by default. Several non-Solaris clients send LIST instead. In order to
	   make the Solaris ftp client send LIST when the ls command is issued, set FTP_LS_SENDS_NLST to no. The value of FTP_LS_SENDS_NLST is yes
	   by default.

       If the user sets a value for FTP_LS_SENDS_NLST in the user's environment, this value will override any FTP_LS_SENDS_NLST directive that	is
       specified in /etc/default/ftp.
