Try a bit of awk

I normally use awk for this kind of problem - it works effectively

awk '{tot+=$1} END{print tot}' numbers.txt

Alternatively, change your script as shown:

#!/bin/sh
sum=0
for i in `cat numbers.txt |cut -f1`
do
sum=`expr $sum + $i` # Add back quotes around the expr
done
echo $sum

I am using egrep to extract numbers from a file and storing them as variables in a script.        sum - checksum and count the blocks in a file

SYNOPSIS

       sum [OPTION]... [FILE]...

DESCRIPTION

       Print checksum and block counts for each FILE.

       -r     use BSD sum algorithm, use 1K blocks

       -s, --sysv
	      use System V sum algorithm, use 512 bytes blocks

       --help display this help and exit

       --version
	      output version information and exit

       With no FILE, or when FILE is -, read standard input.
