sort/uniq

I have a file:

Fred
Fred
Fred
Jim
Fred
Jim
Jim

If sort is executed on the listed file, shouldn't the output be?:

Fred
Fred
Fred
Fred
Jim
Jim
Jim

Then if uniq is executed on the sorted file, shouldn't the output be:

4 Fred
3 Jim

I can't get it to work. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
