i thought it was only volume groups that can not be reduced. or was that only logical groups?
i really wanna say its the VG that is a static. IE: you can add and swap disks but you cant make it smaller w/ out removeing it and recreateing it.
mmmmmm makes me go back to my aix documention. i know its not hp-ux but its the only other os i have that uses a "smarter disk management system"

2. UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers
I have a SunOS 5.8 server. I suspect there may be errors with one of the physical disks (based on someone reporting hearing a "clicking sound" during the night shift, however I do not hear anything this morning).
Which log would show this?
Thank you. (2 Replies)

Hi,
I'm getting the errors below in the errpt report for a IBM Blade server. I'm guessing there's a problem with one of the disks but don't know how I can confirm this. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

vgscan
VGSCAN(8) System Manager's Manual VGSCAN(8)
NAME
vgscan - scan all disks for volume groups and rebuild caches
SYNOPSIS
vgscan [-d|--debug] [-h|-?|--help] [--ignorelockingfailure] [--mknodes] [-P|--partial] [-v|--verbose]
DESCRIPTION
vgscan scans all SCSI, (E)IDE disks, multiple devices and a bunch of other disk devices in the system looking for LVM physical volumes and
volume groups. Define a filter in lvm.conf(5) to restrict the scan to avoid a CD ROM, for example.
In LVM2, vgscans take place automatically; but you might still need to run one explicitly after changing hardware.
OPTIONS
See lvm(8) for common options.
--mknodes
Also checks the LVM special files in /dev that are needed for active logical volumes and creates any missing ones and removes unused
ones.
--cache
Scan devices for LVM physical volumes and volume groups and instruct the lvmetad daemon to update its cached state accordingly.
