Aravind,
I presume, you want to save your man pages for future reference or for printing purpose.What I would suggest is to try the following command:
# man ls | col -b > filename
where,
ls - is the command whose man pages are required.
filename - is the name of the file to be saved.
I'm sure this will solve your problem.

I have a file with millions of records...Before I experiment, I would like to know which one is faster.
Both the commands work absolutely fine on a smaller set of records.

While I do know some control characters need to be escaped, can normal characters also be escaped and still work the same way? Basically I do not know all control characters that have a special meaning, for example, ?, ., % have a meaning and have to be escaped... (11 Replies)

I removed ^M with %s/^M//g command
but how to represent ^@ and ^H
e.g. for ^M it is hold ctrl then v and m..

ctype_cntrl - Check for control character(s)
SYNOPSIS
bool ctype_cntrl (string $text)
DESCRIPTION
Checks if all of the characters in the provided string, $text, are control characters. Control characters are e.g. line feed, tab, escape.
PARAMETERS
o $text
- The tested string.
RETURN VALUES
Returns TRUE if every character in $text is a control character from the current locale, FALSE otherwise.
EXAMPLES

$strings = array('string1' => "
", 'string2' => 'arf12');
foreach ($strings as $name => $testcase) {
if (ctype_cntrl($testcase)) {
echo "The string '$name' consists of all control characters.

The above example will output:

Note
If an integer between -128 and 255 inclusive is provided, it is interpreted as the ASCII value of a single character (negative val-
ues have 256 added in order to allow characters in the Extended ASCII range). Any other integer is interpreted as a string contain-
ing the decimal digits of the integer.
